 Alive!

Alive!

$23.99

Alive! was the album that catapulted Kiss from cult attraction to mega-superstars. It was their first Top Ten album, remaining on the charts for 110 weeks and eventually going quadruple platinum. Culled from shows in Detroit, New Jersey, Iowa, and Cleveland on the Dressed to Kill tour, the record features producer Eddie Kramer doing a masterful job of capturing the band’s live performance on record. The band’s youthful energy is contagious, and with positively electric versions of their best early material, it’s no mystery why Alive! is widely regarded as one of the greatest live hard rock recordings of all time. “Rock and Roll All Nite” became a Top 20 smash and was the main reason for the album’s success, but there are many other tracks that are just as strong — “Deuce,” “Strutter,” “Firehouse,” “Parasite,” “She,” “100,000 Years,” “Black Diamond,” and “Cold Gin” all shine in a live setting. Although there’s been some speculation of extensive overdubbing to correct mistakes, Alive! remains Kiss’ greatest album ever. An essential addition to any rock collection. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

 Beautiful Noise

Beautiful Noise

Beautiful Noise, Neil Diamond’s 11th studio album in the ten years since he emerged with his first chart single “Solitary Man,” announces its ambitions on its cover, which displays the skyline of Manhattan under a red horizon and a black sky, overlaid with the words “Produced by Robbie Robertson.” Most albums, of course, do not announce the name of the producer on the front cover, but Diamond wants to let people know that Beautiful Noise is an event. That he had convinced his Malibu, CA, neighbor, the Band’s guitarist and songwriter, to produce him was a surprise not only because he had worked with longtime producer Tom Catalano off and on dating back to his first solo singles session in 1963, but also because Robertson possesses the kind of rock credentials Diamond had never been granted. Further, as that ominous cover and Diamond’s record sleeve epitaph (“…tin pan alley died hard, but there was always the music to keep you going”) indicate, Beautiful Noise was intended as something of a concept album, the songwriter’s look back at his days as a scuffling denizen of the Brill Building in the early ’60s. This theme comes out immediately in the rousing title song, in which he sings of the inspiration that the city’s sounds bring to him. Thereafter, the story line seems to get lost, at least in lyrical terms, but Diamond and Robertson give each track its own musical identity: “Stargazer” employs a Dixieland arrangement, complete with wailing horns; “Lady-Oh” is the disc’s romantic ballad; “Don’t Think ? Feel” has a Caribbean rhythm; “Surviving the Life” is in gospel style; “Street Life” has a jazz/R&B feel with a vocalese melody; “Home Is a Wounded Heart” is the torch song; and “Jungletime” is the rock & roll number. The heart of the album (and its leadoff single) is “If You Know What I Mean,” in which Diamond looks back with regret and a sense of loss on his youth, “when we gave it away for the sake of a dream/In a penny arcade, if you k…

After nearly a decade at GRP Records, smooth jazz’s premier ensemble made a very successful switch to Windham Hill with this recording inspired by leader Russ Freeman’s ski adventures in his adopted home of Colorado. Their tenth album continues the band’s recent successful ventures into urban-flavored music while also showcasing Freeman’s amazing talents for jazz and flamenco guitar playing, in addition to his trademark classical guitar-influenced pop/rock sound. The collection is also a celebration of ten years of the smooth jazz format and the Rippingtons’ instrumental role in creating music that helps define the genre’s sound. The band weaves through the title track with a soaring, echoing guitar melody over a cool, shuffling hip-hop groove. Mark Williamson’s spiritual-flavored chanting enhances the moody textures and funky, retro-soul vibe of the electric guitar-driven “Deep Powder,” while the steamy, classical guitar-led “Seven Nights in Rome” finds the band looking down from the mountaintop, thoughtfully recounting the romantic ambience of a recent concert trip to Italy. “North Peak”‘s slamming percussion approximates a speedy downhill race, but all that chill is more than balanced by the daring and exotic “Angelfire,” which blends Freeman’s colorful flamenco stylings and Arturo Sandoval’s crackling trumpet. ~ Jonathan Widran, Rovi

 Black Diamond/Crosscut Saw

Black Diamond/Crosscut Saw

$19.99

The Groundhogs were an at-times better than average 1960s British blues band led by Tony “T.S.” McPhee, whose Jack Bruce-like vocals and raggedly aggressive guitar style made the group sound at times like a looser version of Cream. By the mid-’70s the Groundhogs sounded more like Cream thrown into a blender with Ten Years After, and their hard rock sound, for all of McPhee’s guitar brilliance, had taken on an alarmingly generic feel. This set combines the two albums for Liberty/UA that the group released in 1976, Crosscut Saw (begun in 1975 as a McPhee solo project) and Black Diamond, neither of which is particularly distinctive aside from Crosscut’s acoustic-based “Mean Mistreater” and “Pastoral Future,” which features some lovely guitar playing by McPhee. It’s nice to have both of these albums on one disc, though, which should delight fans of the band. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi

Black Snake Diamond Role [Yep Rock]

Black Snake Diamond Role [Yep Rock]

$14.98

The Soft Boys’ fusion of the energy of punk and the baroque textures and melodic twists of psychedelia was ahead of its time, but for the group’s leader, Robyn Hitchcock, that had become a problem. Brilliant as their music was, hardly anyone was listening when the Soft Boys released their masterpiece, Underwater Moonlight, in 1980 — so a year later the band was history and Hitchcock released his first solo album, Black Snake Diamond Role. While the other three members of the Soft Boys appeared on the album (guitarist Kimberley Rew, bassist Matthew Seligman, and drummer Morris Windsor) along with Vince Ely of the Psychedelic Furs, Knox from the Vibrators, and a then-unknown Thomas Dolby, Black Snake Diamond Role represented a subtle but clear shift away from the more aggressive tone of the Soft Boys toward a more pop-oriented sound. “The Man Who Invented Himself” is user-friendly in a way the Soft Boys had never been, and the production, while mostly straightforward, is more polished and professional. Even though the surfaces of this album are more welcoming than the Soft Boys, the surrealism of the lyrics and the trippy undertow of the melodies are in the same league as Hitchcock’s earlier work, and while “Acid Bird,” “Out of the Picture,” and “Brenda’s Iron Sledge” are newly catchy and engaging, the guitar work on “I Watch the Cars” shows Hitchcock’s vision had changed very little, and the menace of “Do Policemen Sing?” is only slightly undercut by its wit. Black Snake Diamond Role staked out a distinct sonic territory for Hitchcock’s solo career that still made room for the abundant talent he’d displayed in his years with the Soft Boys, and remains one of his most enjoyable efforts. [Yep Roc’s 2007 reissue of Black Snake Diamond Role features eight bonus tracks, four of which appeared on Rhino’s 1995 edition, though “Dancing on God’s Thumb” from the Rhino release has vanished. Most of the bonus selections follow in the same vein as the album, alb…

 Heavy Metal Killers

Heavy Metal Killers

$15.98

You know that a certain kind of music has come full circle when the word “new” is used to describe it; but what about when the musical genre in question already had the word “new” in it last time around? No, we’re not talking about a “New New Wave” movement, but close; this question pertains to Earache’s Heavy Metal Killers compilation, which profiles ten young bands from across Europe and the Americas that are busy reviving the sonic aesthetic and blue-collar attitude of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, nearly 30 years after its 1979/1980 apogee. Problem is, much like the original New York punk rock scene of the mid-’70s, whose key bands ranged in style from the Ramones, to Television, to Talking Heads to Blondie, the N.W.O.B.H.M. was one of those rare musical movements connected more by a specific mindset and shared experience than a clearly definable sound template. So although it was responsible for spawning many of the most popular subsequent heavy metal subgenres — from power metal (Iron Maiden), to black metal (Venom), to thrash (Raven via Mot? rhead), and even glam metal, to a certain degree (Def Leppard) — the act of replicating the N.O.W.B.H.M.’s feeling is far more challenging than initially meets the ear. Having said all that, Heavy Metal Killers boasts several participants who come damn close to succeeding in this seemingly impossible task: beginning with album bookends, “Behold the Hand of Glory,” by Dutch Iron Maiden disciples Powervice, and “Witches Sabbath,” from Sweden’s occult-inspired In Solitude, as well as the convincingly raw “Steel Maker,” by Mexico’s Voltax, who narrowly avoid crossing over into thrash. Also deserving of kudos are those falsetto-happy Swedes in Portrait, whose stupendous contribution, “A Thousand Nightmares,” actually worships Denmark’s Mercyful Fate, instead of anything N.W.O.B.H.M., but reminds one how damn special and unique King Diamond and crew were. Beyond these tracks, though, things get a littl…

 Junkyard Speed Ball

Junkyard Speed Ball

$16.98

Left Lane Cruiser — a two-piece band comprised of Frederick ? Joe? Evans IV on slide guitar and vocals and Bren Beck on drums — may be from Fort Wayne, IN but they sound like a couple of unhinged punk hillbillies raised on the North Mississippi hill country blues of R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. They mine the same sort of modal blues territory but, with half-distorted vocals pushed through what sounds like a shorted-out karaoke mike, they also sound like a lo-fi swampy version of the Stooges, all full of rampaging impatience. Junkyard Speed Ball is the duo? s fourth album (and third for Alive Records), and it doesn? t deviate at all from the sound of their earlier releases — this isn? t a band much concerned with evolving its sound. That? s a good thing, because they make a hell of a lot of noise and pretty much mow through every song with real rock fervor. The opener, ? Lost My Mind,? is absolutely visceral, and it sets the tone for the whole album — track after track races forward with the accelerator down, and if it? s sometimes hard to tell what Evans is scorching his vocal cords to say, well, it? s still the blues and we all know what that means. But this isn? t woe-is-me blues. It? s pissed-off blues. Song after song here clangs away at the end of the junkyard chain, riding Evans’ searing, chiming modal guitar riffs and Beck’s loose-limbed pounding on the drums. ? Shine? gallops like a magnificent drunken plow horse, while ? Weed Vodka? finds Evans’ chiming electric guitar sounding like a clawhammer banjo run through an amp stack set on 11. Nothing is reined in here, and the accumulation of these blasts of hill country tweaks makes this a powerful album, one that replaces clarity with the sheer joy of impassioned noise — stomp it to death seems to be the motto. Recorded by Jim Diamond (who also plays bass here on ? Represent,? while John Wesley Myers of the Black Diamond Heavies adds organ and keyboard to four songs) at hi…

 Kiss

Kiss

$11.99

Kiss’ 1974 self-titled debut is one of hard rock’s all-time classic studio recordings. Kiss is chock full of their best and most renowned compositions, containing elements of Rolling Stones/New York Dolls party-hearty rock & roll, Beatles tunefulness, and Sabbath/Zep heavy metal, and wisely recorded primal and raw by producers Richie Wise and Kenny Kerner (of Gladys Knight fame). Main songwriters Stanley and Simmons each had a knack for coming up with killer melodies and riffs, as evidenced by “Nothin’ to Lose” and “Deuce” (by Simmons), “Firehouse” and “Black Diamond” (by Stanley), as well as “Strutter” and “100,000 Years” (collaborations by the two). Also included is the Ace Frehley alcohol anthem “Cold Gin,” “Let Me Know” (a song that Stanley played for Simmons upon their very first meeting, then titled “Sunday Driver”), and one of Kiss’ few instrumentals: the groovy “Love Theme from Kiss” (penned by the entire band). The only weak track is a tacky cover of the 1959 Bobby Rydell hit “Kissin’ Time,” which was added to subsequent pressings of the album to tie in with a “Kissing Contest” promotion the band was involved in at the time. Along with 1976′s Destroyer, Kiss’ self-titled debut is their finest studio album, and has only improved over the years. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi
